Where to stay
Hotels we know and recommend, to suit every budget.
Splurge
Grand rooms in the best positions in the city.
Hilton Budapest
District I, Castle District
Standard mass market opulence in the crowning location of the city, built into the walls of the old Dominican monastery next to Fisherman’s Bastion.
Four Seasons Gresham Palace
District V, riverfront
Another level up again — housed in the famed former British insurance building known as the Gresham Palace, right on the Danube by the Chain Bridge.
Hotel Clark
District I, foot of the Chain Bridge
A great upper-mid boutique feel, named for the square it sits on at the Buda end of the bridge. Stunning location.
Kempinski Hotel Corvinus
District V, Erzsébet tér
Manages to marry excellence with unfussiness, right in the centre of Pest.
Mid-priced
Character, and a short walk or tram ride from the middle.
Bohem Art Hotel
District VII
Independent hotel with an art feel, and compact but well-designed rooms.
InterContinental Budapest
Riverfront
A massive breezeblock of a place (one of Budapest’s few outstanding contributions to brutalism), but great value for its location and views.
Hotel Rum
Near Váci Street
Lodged in a historic townhouse with 40 rooms, offering a fresh contemporary feel and a rooftop breakfast.
Continental Hotel Budapest
District VII, Jewish Quarter
An Art Nouveau bathhouse-turned-hotel next to the famous Budapest Synagogue, well situated for restaurants and drinking.
Radisson Blu Béke Hotel
District VI, Terézváros
A 1913 grande dame with the original stained glass and frescoes still up, now run with crisp Radisson efficiency.
Ensana Grand Margaret Island
Margaret Island
A grand old spa hotel on a literal island park in the middle of the city — an oasis of calm, if mildly tricky with public transport.
Danubius Hotel Astoria
District V, city centre
A 1914 landmark on its own crossroads, extremely plugged into the transport network. Slightly down at heel these days, but more than makes up for it with its golden-age faded grandeur.
Cheap
Clean and sound, sometimes at the cost of a longer ride in.
Hotel Charles
District I, foot of Gellért Hill
A shopworn proper hotel, with a charming lobby that makes it feel pricier than it is, and very friendly staff. Rooms are acceptable if tired, and super clean.
Hotel Canada
District IX, Ferencváros
A super-cheap Soviet-era hotel with perfectly good rooms and an unpleasant breakfast — respectable, but a decent trek into town on the tram.
HELIOS Hotel Apartments
District XII, Buda Hills
A friendly family-run place with good rooms, a bar and restaurant, and jaw-dropping views over the city for not much money — at the cost of a 40-minute bus ride each way.
Smart Apart
District XIII
The classic aparthotel concept done right — nice beds, self-consciously ‘funky’ design, easy check-in, a cool coffee shop downstairs, and a supermarket a few doors down. Kitchenette in the rooms, plus really nice balconies for most.
TL Hotel
District VI, near Oktogon
Not quite a capsule hotel — the rooms are getting on for cupboard size, trading space for cash — but clean and modern.
